K-9 teams will be trained in various aspects of patrol operations and have the opportunity to certify through the National Narcotics Detection Association or American Working Dog Association.

Topics:

Patrol Operations:

Building search for man, tracking, vehicle extractions, area search for man, aggression control, obedience, gunfire, bite building, recall.

Detection of Contraband:

Vehicle sniffs, luggage searches, interior building searching, open area searches, 4th amendment.

K-9 Teams will need to bring all equipment assigned to them including:

A 6 ft. leash and 15 ft. leash, collar(s), reward, food, bowl(s), indoor kennel.

Optional, but recommended: harness, muzzle, bite sleeve, bite suit, bug spray, flashlight,

duty weapon and proper training attire.

This course of training will cover most scenarios that a K-9 team will face during daily street operations. Attendees will be given the opportunity to certify through one of two nationally recognized certifications that are good for one year. The seminar will begin on November 13th at noon and will end the afternoon of November 15th

***NOTE*** Participants needing lodging need to complete that portion of the registration form. Lodging and meals are $40 per day made payable to MLEOA.  All Certification fees will be paid by MLEOA if you are a current member of the association.

Instructors:

Captain Richard Chandler has been with the Southaven Police Department for over 16 years. He is currently the Captain over the Special Investigations Division and Gang Unit. He is also the commander of the SWAT team. Captain Chandler is a certified Police K-9 Trainer through Vohne Liche Kennels and is a certifying official with NNDDA and AWD. He is the President of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers’ Association and a graduate of the FBINA 264. He is a former K-9 handler and Lieutenant overseeing the Southaven K-9 Unit. He has trained and certified dozens of K-9 teams throughout his career.

Officer Lynn Brown has been in law enforcement for twenty five years. He currently works for the Hernando Police Department as a K-9 handler focusing on Highway Interdiction. Most of his time in law enforcement and has been spent working as a K-9 handler and trainer. He is a certified Police K-9 Trainer through Vohne Liche Kennels. Officer Brown has trained dozens of K-9 teams locally and for the military. Officer Brown is the Northern Sergeant at Arms for MLEOA. He is a certifying official for AWD.

Lieutenant Stephen Hodges has been with the Southaven Police Department for ten years. He has been a K-9 handler for most of that time. He is a certified Police K-9 Trainer through Vohne Liche Kennels and is currently supervising the Southaven K-9 Unit. Lt. Hodges is a certifying official with AWD.
